As a business you are required by LAW to comply with all current regulations to protect your employees, your customers and you from electrical shock, fire hazards and accidents. The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 states: "Every employer shall ensure that work equipment is maintained in an efficient state, in efficient working order and in good repair."
Portable appliance testing is vital to protect your business, its employees and the general public. Normally one of the first things Fire Officers and Health & Safety Inspectors ask to see on any inspection visit is your PAT records.
There are a number of reasons why appliances should be tested on a regular basis:
- To comply with the electricity at work regulations
- To comply with the provision and use of work equipment regulations.
- To minimize the risk of fire and injury caused by electrical appliances (Each year about 1000 accidents at work involving electric shock or burns are reported to the Health and Safety Executive about 30 of these are fatal).
- To satisfy your insurance company. (Most insurance companies require evidence of PAT testing before settling a claim).
- To comply with all health & safety requirements and ISO 9000 standards.
- To comply with quality assurances.
- As part of your fire risk assessment compliance.
- Failure to comply with Electrical Regulations can lead to a maximum penalty of a £5,000 fine and/or up to six months imprisonment. For breaches under the general duties of the Health Safety at Work Act 1974, penalties of up to £20,000 were introduced in 1992 and offences heard on indictment in the Crown Court attract unlimited financial penalties and up to two years imprisonment.
Recommended Frequencies for Inspection and Testing
The recommended intervals between electrical tests and formal visual inspections which are tabled below are optima and may require to be reviewed in the light of experience. These frequencies are based on the Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE), 'Code of Practice for In-Service Inspection and Testing of Electrical Equipment' and the Health and Safety Executive's HSG 107 'Maintaining Portable and Transportable Electrical Equipment'.

Emergency lighting is required in all premises where people are employed and it is a mandatory requirement to be installed where artificial light is installed.
Under 'fire Precaution (workplace) Regulations 1999' all employers, landlords or occupiers have a duty to carry out a risk assessment to ensure their premises and activities are able to facilitate safe escape in the event of an emergency.
The Emergency Lighting British Standard BS5266 defines the requirement for the correct installation of Emergency Lighting. Compliance with this standard will ensure that your premises meets the requirements of the Fire Precaution (workplace) Regulations.
BS5266 requires inspection & testing at the following intervals:
- Daily (self test)
- Monthly
- Six monthly
- Three yearly
- Subsequent Annual Test
Brierley Facilities Ltd offers a periodic test and inspection of your emergency lighting system as an essential part of this compliance. The test and inspection complies fully with BS5622 and will include the test and inspection of all existing lighting and ensure that emergency lighting is situated in all the required areas. Periodic Emergency Lighting Test reports are provided as part of the service. Any additional emergency lighting that may be required following our test and inspection would be priced, and then completed if required.
All customers contracting for monthly emergency light testing will be provided with the additional checks required both 6 monthly and annually within this price.
